Risks of sending health care information via email, text, social media
There are risks to sending personal health or other information electronically, unless using a completely secure messaging system.
Risks may include
Anyone’s email and/or text message might be viewed by others, especially messages to a social media site. Texts, emails, and other messages become written documents that may be viewed on a phone or computer until they are erased. Electronic messages may be stored on a cell phone, computer, or social media site, even when erased. An email or text message to Human Service Center staff may not be retrieved immediately.
Suggestions to reduce risk
- Set up a security lock on your phone. All phones can be locked.
- Do not share your password for email or for social media access.
Please note that while these steps can reduce risks of information being seen by others they will not prevent the more determined eavesdropper. The best answer is to not use email for anything that may be confidential.
